Crowds flocked to Wirral Show

THE 30th Wirral Show has been described by organisers as the best yet.

Exact figures are yet to be confirmed but officials behind the show said the annual event pulled in huge crowds over the weekend with its star attraction the Household Cavalry.

They had hoped to build on the recent success of the Open by making this year's event the best so far and pull in record crowds to put Wirral on the map.

Promotions chairman Ken Hurst said: "We had to move the date because it was due to take place during the Open, which wouldn't have been feasible from a policing point of view.

"The Open drew in huge crowds and we wanted to build on its success and show people what Wirral can do.

"The Household Cavalry really was the star attraction and the crowds were around 10 or 15 deep.

"It was a shame the weather wasn't as good as it has been but the numbers turned out and everyone who came seemed to have a great time."

The Household Cavalry, which usually can only be seen Trooping the Colour and at official duties in London, last visited the show 10 years ago.

Organised by the Rotary, Lions and Round Table clubs of Wallasey, other attractions included a farmers' market, camel racers and the White Helmets Motorcycle Display Team.

Show chairman Alan Robinson said: "Merseyside Police told me it was probably the best family-orientated show he had ever seen.

"The farmers market also completely sold out of everything they had.

"It was our 30th anniversary and so it was particularly special for us - and I also think it was very special for everyone who came down."

It costs around £62,000, plus considerable backing from Wirral Council, to stage the show and any extra is used for local charities.
