Perfect Pitch: RLPO’s Vasily Petrenko named new chief conductor of Oslo Philharmonic

VASILY PETRENKO has been appointed chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's current chief conductor will take up the four-year post in August, 2013.

The RLPO is adamant his new position will not affect renegotiations of Petrenko’s contact with the Hope Street-based organis tion, which currently runs until 2015.

The Russian conductor, who joined the Phil in 2004, has reinforced his commitment to the Liverpool orchestra.

He said: "This appointment will allow me to work in depth and in detail with another leading orchestra, as we have and will continue to do here."

Petrenko is to exclusively bring the RLPO to play at Birkenhead School on June 18.

The event is the first time a school has played host to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Petrenko, as they perform for an estimated audience of up to 4,000.

The concert has been staged as part of the school’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Guest soloist, mezzo soprano Kathryn Rudge features and the concert will culminate with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, accompanied by a choreographed display of fireworks.

The audience is invited to bring picnic baskets and rugs, while there will also be food and licensed bars on the night. Free parking will be only two minutes’ walk away at McAllester Field.
