Frank Field: Give some of your time to help Wirral’s young Brownie groups

ON REMEMBRANCE Sunday last year something lovely happened.

The town leaders and veterans were paying homage to our war dead and fallen comrades.

Then two young Brownies, with Brown Owl, laid their wreath. The link between past and future generations was struck.

Afterwards I talked to Brown Owl herself.

I asked about the Guide and Brownie movement in Birkenhead. Brown Owl said there were many units around Wirral and while there are lots of potential Brownies wishing to join in Birkenhead, there simply were not the adults to run enough packs.

The Brownies need women aged between 18 and 65 who can help with either five to seven-year-old Rainbows, Brownies (seven-10), Guides (10-14) or for the senior section, which caters for young women aged 14-25.

People can volunteer as much or as little time as they wish, from occasionally helping at meetings right through to – once they are trained – running a unit.

The Guide movement even covers the cost of CRB checks.

Anyone wishing to achieve their adult leader qualification would be given a mentor and support to complete the course but it is fairly easy if you turn up each week.

Men can help behind the scenes in a wonderful reversal of roles!
