Wirral Letters: Shortpoints June 1

I RECENTLY had a knee operation at Clatterbridge Hospital.

The professional medical care, consideration and kindness, I received from the consultant, Mr Robert Harvey, his team, and all the staff on Ward M1, was outstanding, and the follow-up after care has also been tremendous.

NHS gets a lot of criticism and not enough praise.

I hope they do not stop doing operations at Clatterbridge to save money in the immediate term, as we are living in a society that promotes sports and leisure, and an ageing population which will mean increasing numbers of surgical needs for hips, knees, shoulders etc. Surely we can justify keeping the well used facilities at Clatterbridge open, as they are a much-needed community benefit.

I WOULD like to congratulate a certain Mr Gerard Dudley who had managed to procure two bus stops on Park Road East.

Elderly people have had to walk up and down this long road for years.

He approached Frank Field who contacted certain bus companies.

Now Birkenhead residents can save their shoe leather!

I am writing to ask you to support Male Cancer Awareness Month this June.

I became patron of the ‘Everyman’ campaign when I realised that, despite the worrying statistics, male cancers weren’t getting the same attention or funding as other major diseases. Prostate cancer kills one man every hour, while testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men.

Everyman was set up by The Institute of Cancer Research in 1997 to improve these figures. Since then, its scientists have made some promising breakthroughs, with testicular cancer now 97% curable and new prostate cancer drugs offering hope to thousands.

By donating to Everyman, you’ll be supporting more of this world-leading research. An easy way to get involved is to ‘Turn Blue’ this June. Get sponsored to wear something, something blue or dye something blue! One day, the work you’ve helped fund could save your life or that of your loved ones.
