Wirral News Letters – June 9

FROM the large number of placards which have recently appeared in the Oldfield Farm area it would seem that there are objections to the siting of a wind turbine on green belt land.

If it is on grounds of ugliness then I would say that a turbine is far less ugly that the lines of electricity pylons that can be seen on green belt land all over the country.

I believe that wind turbines are really only ugly to those biased against them.

They can look beautiful, as witnessed by Andy Spencer’s great photo of a sunset at New Brighton (Scene by You, May 26).

The proposed site for the wind turbine is an excellent one.

MY faith has been restored in human nature.

My daughter left her phone in a taxi on June 3. The taxi driver and his family went out of their way to return the phone to her. Hail to honest, kindhearted and hard-working Wirral taxi drivers.

AFTER the recent water shortages, may I suggest a small amount of the compensation be sent to water charities.

After struggling to cope for a few days, I have realised how lucky we are to have safe, clean water at the turn of a tap.

I WOULD like to thank the 14,290 people who voted for the Labour Party in Wirral West on May 6.

I would also to thank the many Labour Party members and supporters who helped with my campaign.

Don’t wait for a tragedy on busy road

MAY I through your newspaper endorse the comments of Harry Price regarding the dangers of crossing the road at Spital crossroads (“Driver arrested after smash”, June 2).

When my daughter and other young adults with special needs (including partial sight, walking and learning difficulties) moved into nearby sheltered flats two years ago, attempts were made by Ben Chapman and others to request a pelican crossing.

The youngsters also got a petition together which was signed by local residents using the shops and doctor's surgery and other Bebington residents.

This was sent to the council but nothing came of it. I understand there has to be a fatality before any action is taken.

A few months ago a pelican crossing appeared in Heath Road, where there is very little danger and is operated by a lollipop man at school time.

The rest of the time it is virtually unused.

Please can we have a much more urgently needed one at Spital before there is a serious pedestrian injury!

Horrifying mess

LITTER-free beaches? You must be joking!

Parts of the coastal strip at Harrison Drive between the old Derby Pool site and the sandhills are never cleaned.

To my certain knowledge the same litter washed up by high tides has been there for three years.

Councillors seem to have no success in getting action and Streetscene are very good at e-mails acknowledging the problem and poor to act. The only people I see picking litter are the dog walkers.

Visitors are horrified at the mess and residents have given up complaining.

Wonderful walk

WASN’T Sunday, May 23 a fantastic day?

The sun came out and so did the people of Wirral and beyond in their thousands to support the Wirral Coastal Walk.

An amazing 5,500 people of all ages actually did the walk.

As you know, those that benefit are the charities, both large and small, well-known ones and others less so. These charities have benefited to the tune of over £400,000 from this one-day event. Marvellous.

We will never have the profile of a London Marathon but we are extremely grateful to the Wirral News, Daily Post and Radio Merseyside for all that they do, to bring our event to the attention of the public.

Our major sponsor once again this year was Unilever, who really support the walk by encouraging their employees to participate as well as giving out goodie bags to those that have completed the walk and supporting us in many different ways.

It goes without saying that we are extremely grateful to all our sponsors and supporters for without their help this walk would be extremely difficult to hold.

Thank you Wirral for making the Coastal Walk a day to remember and making the Rotary Club of North Wirral extremely proud of you all.

See you all next year.
