Wirral News Letters – September 30

Hesford was right to resign

INTEGRITY and belief in principles are something which sadly we, the public, do not usually attribute to ministers in government and other holders of high office when facing up to their own indiscretions and failings.

In contrast to the Prime Minister’s craven support for the Attorney General Baroness Scotland, despite the controversy over her employing an illegal immigrant, it is refreshing to learn that Stephen Hesford, MP for Wirral West, resigned his own position as her Parliamentary aide.

Against the backdrop of the MPs expenses scandal which has so damaged public trust and confidence in our elected representatives, Hesford is to be congratulated.

Scandal or serious error should not have to wait until judgement by the ballot box.

Her behaviour simply cheapens justice. His enhances morality.

We were lucky

AFTER hearing about poor baby Freya Breen (Wirral News, September 16) I couldn’t believe it; it all sounded so familiar.

My son Shay was born on August 1, 2008 at Arrowe Park Hospital at five days overdue. A couple of hours before I delivered my son his heart rate had been dropping on the monitor. Finally his head appeared and he wasn't breathing.

The cord was tight round his neck and within seconds about eight doctors were running through the door.

Shay didn’t get a heartbeat for 12 minutes then was ventilated while waiting for the team from the Women’s Hospital to arrive to transport him over there.

Four hours after he was born we arrived at the Women’s and Shay was put into the cooling system straight away.

By midnight he was off the ventilator but having seizures. We were told he had pulled through the worst but he was going to be disabled in some way.

We got Shay home at seven weeks old and the nightmare of thinking we were going to lose our baby was over. Shay is not disabled in any way – he's perfect and he’s his mummy’s baby angel.

I was 19 when I gave birth to Shay and it was so very hard watching my tiny baby fighting for his little life.

We were the lucky ones. I think it’s fantastic that Freya’s parents have brought light to this situation and am sure that in Freya’s memory, lots of babies will get the chance to live.

Dog ban call

I LIVE in Spain for most of the year but still enjoy spending the summer back in England, in Wirral where my family live.

New Brighton has lovely beaches but it is such a shame that Wirral Council has failed to ban dogs on the beaches, at least during the summer months when families take their children to play in the sand.

I believe that responsible dog owners would not dream of letting their animals off the lead to run around children on the beach. However, the couple of times I ventured down on the sand with my sister we were bothered by dogs.

If the council is hoping to attract more visitors to New Brighton through the regeneration plans then they need to seriously consider making the beaches dog free, at least for the summer.
