SPRING is just around the corner and the local authority have surpassed themselves with their latest initiative to decorate the road side verges.
Enormous yellow signs have sprung up advising of Accident Road Alerts.
They state that hundreds of accidents have occurred over the last three years along a particular route.
Being a frequent traveller along this route, I have to admit to only seeing a handful of incidents this century.
As our local authority slips further in to the red, one has to ask whether these costly signs are really going to help anything?
Perhaps these are a prediction of the accidents which will result as motorists are distracted trying to read what is displayed on these grotesque eyesores.
With ridiculous traffic lighting schemes, central bollards popping up in the middle of roads, and numerous complicated changes being imposed at road junctions, one ponders what further ‘treats’ will be bestowed upon the motorists and residents of Wirral in the future?
Where is all the money coming from?

Dog dirt concerns
I AM writing to express my disgust at the amount of dog dirt on the pavements outside Brackenwood Infant School.
I have, on several occasions, had to clean my son’s shoes before he goes into school and feel that this could cause environmental and hygiene issues.
I know that most dog owners are responsible and clean up their pets’ mess, and indeed, have many friends who have dogs, and are always prepared with their “little bags”!
I would appreciate it if you could publish my concerns, to hopefully highlight this growing problem.
I am sure there are many parents in Wirral who have had to deal with this also.
I would like to thank all those dog owners who are responsible and clean up after their pets but please, please try to get this message across to those who just let their dogs wander, fouling our streets, walkways and school entrances.

Mortgages riddle
WHAT a joke. How can Wirral Council offer mortgages to first-time buyers and small businesses when they claim they are so strapped for cash that they have to close 11 libraries and other buildings as part of the Strategic Asset Review?
If Wirral Council has to borrow £20m to improve libraries and rebuild two central libraries, where will the money come from to finance these mortgages?
Will they have to borrow this money or will it come from the savings made from the strategic asset review?
If they already have the money for these mortgages, they should use it to save Wirral’s libraries.

Stop the charity bags
WHEN are we going to see an end to the barrage of charity collecting bags?
It is getting beyond a joke. We have had 11 in the past three weeks.
And the prices the charities charge are beyond belief. My grandson needed a smart shirt to go for an interview for a job and I could not believe what they wanted for a well-worn, second-hand shirt.
I told the assistant I could buy new for less, so I did. I got two brand new shirts for the price the charity shop wanted for one.
It makes you wonder where the money goes to when a charity has just spent £30,000 refurbishing its shop. How do they justify that?

Don’t split vote
I APPLAUD all those who are fired up to ensure that any councillor who voted for the cuts and who is up for re-election in 2010 will fail in that quest.
I know that it is being suggested that a new party should be formed by those who strongly oppose these cuts.
I would, however, point out that there is already a party which has campaigned strongly against the cuts, and voted each time against all the proposed cuts.
That party is the Conservative Party.
Don’t throw these pro-cuts councillors a life line by splitting the vote with another candidate.

Wasting money
I HAVE two questions for our council.
First, what is the point in putting up signs on the A551 and other roads in the borough alerting us to the number of accidents in the last three years?
And what is the point in installing speed bumps less than 100 yards from a dead-end?
Has the council got nothing better to do with our money or is this just to use up surplus cash left at the end of the financial year?
