WHAT a delight to take a walk around Birkenhead Park on a beautiful, almost autumn, afternoon – as was the case on Saturday.
Trees just changing colour in all the glorious shades of red, amber and yellow.
Sunshine sparkling on the tranquil lake and dancing in the trees.
Happy ducks, Canada geese and moorhens leisurely gliding along.
Hundreds of fish weaving in and out, making the fisherman of the lake happier than any of them.
Numerous birds and squirrels to add interest.
Best of all was to see the great numbers of mums and dads with their children of all ages enjoying themselves in this haven of beauty - doing all the innocent simple things, such as feeding the ducks, and eating the bread themselves.
Little tots scrambling up the rocks singing “I’m the king of the castle”, not harming anything, just as it should be.
To meet people visiting from Canada viewing the now restored Swiss Bridge and boathouse.
How fortunate the citizens of Wirral, and Birkenhead in particular, are to have had their wonderful heritage reclaimed for their uplifting enjoyment.
Thanks for all this must surely be directed to Professor Robert Lee, chairman of the Friends of Birkenhead Park.
Without the friends’ group’s vision, hard work and dedication to preserving that which is truly beautiful and enriching in ordinary everyday lives, there would never be the chance to educate our children to appreciate and care for the loveliness of the nature around them.
I would strongly advise any present councillors who have not yet visited the park (although I hope they all have) to do so – then they will be determined to always give it the priority it deserves.
