DALE JENNINGS made an inauspicious return to English football, more than two years after leaving Tranmere for Bayern Munich.
Making his Championship debut for Barnsley as a substitute in a 4-0 home defeat to Wigan Athletic, Jennings was given a straight red card five minutes after joining the action as a 60th-minute substitute.
Jennings lunged at James McArthur in the centre circle and referee Geoff Eltringham had no option but to issue the red card as the Wigan player stayed down.
Wigan manager David Flitcroft said: “I just felt Dale gave the referee an easy decision. Once you go airborne with two feet and studs up, even though I don’t think it was dangerous or career-threatening, I do think he has given the ref, who was in a good position to see it, an easy decision. Dale was probably trying too hard but he will learn from having the red mist.”
Jennings left Prenton Park in the summer of 2011, making a £600,000 move to Bayern Munich. But the youngster from Liverpool was unable to break into the first team with the German giants.
