FORMER Tranmere goalkeeper Joe Murphy will be looking forward to a return to Prenton Park next weekend after emerging as the unlikely hero of Coventry City’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success against Burton Albion this week.
Coventry secured a place in the second round after a goalless 90 minutes was followed by a penalty shootout in which each side converted their first nine kicks.
Murphy then saved Burton’s next two penalties and after Coventry teammate Richard Wood failed from the spot, the Irishman stepped-up himself to drive home the decisive kick.
Murphy, 31, began his career at Tranmere, where he progressed through the youth development system, going on to play 74 league and cup games between 1998-2002. He subsequently moved on to West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland, Walsall and Scunthorpe.
