TRANMERE meet Coventry City in a League match for the first time in more than half a century at Prenton Park next weekend.
Rovers’ last league meeting with the Sky Blues was a Third Division fixture at Prenton Park in April 1961. The home side won 2-0.
The two clubs have met on three occasions in cup competitions since then. Tranmere won an FA Cup fourth-round replay 2-0 Prenton Park in February 1968 after holding Coventry to a 1-1 draw at Highfield Road a few days before.
Coventry exacted revenge in a League Cup tie in 1970, winning 2-1 at Highfield Road, following a 1-1 draw Prenton Park.
The most recent meeting was a League Cup tie over two legs in 1999. Tranmere were 5-1 winners in the first game at Prenton Park, with David Kelly notching a hat-trick, and went through 6-4 on aggregate after losing the return 3-1 to Gordon Strachan’s team.
Tranmere made an additional visit to Highfield Road in November 1975, losing 2-0 in the FA Cup to Coventry Sporting.
