TRANMERE manager Ronnie Moore secured his first new recruit of the summer by signing striker Ben Burgess on a two-year contract.
The 30-year-old target man, who has 86 goals in 361 career appearances under his belt, was released by Rovers’ League One rivals Notts County at the end of the season.
Moore said: “We beat several clubs to secure Ben’s services and I’m delighted he is signing for us. He is big and strong and has an impressive strike rate for a target man.
“He will lead the line for us, he will cause defenders problems and he will create chances for others. I watched him a few times playing for Cheltenham and Notts County at the end of the season and he did really well.
“Ben is the first of many new faces we will have here this summer and hopefully we will see more signings over the next few days and weeks.”
Burgess, who was born in Buxton, began his career as a trainee with Blackburn, making three senior appearances for the Lancashire club.
A successful loan spell at Brentford, where he scored 18 goals in 51 appearances in the 2001/02 campaign, earned Burgess a £400,000 move to Stockport County in July 2002.
He moved on again to Hull City in March 2003, this time for £100,000.
Burgess spent four seasons with Blackpool from August 2006. He joined Notts County in the summer of 2010 and spent the final weeks of the 2011/12 campaign on loan to Cheltenham. He scored a goal in Cheltenham’s League Two play-off semi-final success over Torquay United and also played in the side beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra in the Wembley final.
Tranmere secured contract agreements with three players offered new terms this summer: defenders Ian Goodison and Ash Taylor and midfielder Andy Robinson, while John Welsh and David Buchanan accepted offers to join League One rivals Preston.
Midfielder Robbie Weir, who was among a clutch of players released by Rovers at the end of the season, has signed a two-year deal with League Two side Burton Albion.
The signing was influenced by Burton’s new assistant manager Kevin Summerfield, who spent two seasons with Tranmere in a similar role before departing at the end of the season.
Tranmere’s preparations for the 2012/13 campaign include a Liverpool Senior Cup final game against Everton at Prenton Park on Wednesday, August 1 (kick-off 7:30pm).
