THE group of supporters who want to take Tranmere Rovers FC into community ownership have unveiled plans to build a hotel and retail complex at Prenton Park.
The Tranmere Rovers Trust will present their vision and business plan for the Wirral club’s future to an open meeting at Prenton Park on Saturday – ahead of the League One game against Exeter City.
The proposals include a three phase redevelopment of Prenton Park, beginning with an upgrade of existing facilities followed by the construction of a commercial development behind the Bebington Kop, featuring a hotel with conference facilities, retail and leisure outlets, a supporters bar a new club shop.
The third phase will see a complete redevelopment of the Main Stand, which was built in 1967.
The Trust opened talks with Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson last summer about purchasing his controlling shares in the club. They have raised £200,000 towards funding the project.
The 2,500-strong organisation plan to make a formal presentation to the Wirral businessman, Rovers’ owner since 1987, at the end of this month. Then they intend summit a formal bid to buy the club.
Trust chairman Ben Harrison said: “These forward-thinking plans are about protecting the future of Tranmere Rovers and establishing a financially viable, step-by-step approach to steadily growing the football club.”
Harrison added: “We have already held informal discussions with architects and potential commercial partners who have expressed an interest in working with us. We have undertaken a lot of work to ensure our plans are financially sound and would provide a basis for the club to progress sensibly.
“This is about building a sustainable future for a community led football club.”
During the meeting the Trust will also set out their vision for governance of the club, a new approach to supporter engagement, enhancing the match day experience at Prenton Park and finding ways to improve income streams and develop non-football related revenue.
Saturday’s meeting, which is open to all fans and not just Trust members, will be held in the Belmont Suite at Prenton Park, starting at 12.30pm.
