TRANMERE’S heroes of yesteryear narrowly failed to hold on to the national Masters indoor football title they won 12 months ago. Rovers were beaten by Birmingham City after the final at Birmingham’s NEC went to a penalty shootout.
Tranmere, winners of the regional finals at the Liverpool Echo Arena during the summer, beat Aston Villa 2-1 in their first match, thanks to goals by Stuart Barlow and Ged Brannan. They then thrashed Manchester City 6-1 in the semi-final with Barlow hitting a hat-trick, Brannan scoring twice and Georges Santos adding the sixth goal.
Goals by Brannan (two) and Eddie Bishop put Tranmere 3-1 up in the final against Birmingham, one of two local sides invited into the event to increase local interest.
Birmingham snatched two goals late on to take the final to a penalty shootout, which they won 4-2.
