Andy Robinson delighted with Tranmere Rovers Millwall goal

ANDY Robinson hopes his temporary assignment with hometown club Tranmere has taken a decisive turn for the better - thanks to a goal that is sure to go down as a career highlight.

The diminutive front man from Rock Ferry feared an untimely groin injury would deny him the chance to make a telling impact on Rovers' battle for survival during a brief loan spell from Leeds United.

But Robinson's anxieties, not to mention Tranmere's prospects of holding on to League One status, were both given a lift by a 2-0 home win over Millwall last weekend.

Robinson's contribution in his first home start for Les Parry's team was a stunning second goal that knocked the stuffing out of the promotion chasing Lions and made the points safe.

The result means Rovers go into the final game at Stockport on Saturday with a chance of beating relegation - although they need one of the clubs above them, Exeter City or Gillingham, to slip up. Hartlepool could also be dragged into the mix if they are deducted three points by the Football League this week for fielding a suspended player in a recent win over Brighton.

Robinson would like to think the Millwall goal was merely a down payment and there is a second instalment to come at Edgeley Park. He is acutely aware that the loan spell is being funded by Tranmere supporters, who raised £12,000 under the Les Aid scheme to fund his wages.

Robinson said: "My time here did not go the way I wanted after I got injured in my first game at Brighton. But you never forget moments like Saturday and hopefully that makes everything a little bit sweeter for myself and the fans.

"I would love another goal at Stockport. But more than anything I would like three points so we give ourselves the best possible chance of staying up.

"If I get the chance to score another goal, no matter how I score it, then that will be a bonus."

Robinson added: "Every player in the side was magnificent against Millwall. I think people can see the fighting spirit this club has got. It was a great performance and the victory was deserved. The lads can all be proud of themselves. Now we have given ourselves a chance."
