Barnes won’t give in to chanting fans
JOHN BARNES insists he has no intention of giving into the Tranmere fans who are calling on him to quit as manager.
Supporters chanted “Barnes out” from the start to finish of last night’s 2-1 defeat at Bury in the Johnstone’s Paints Trophy.
Barnes said: “I’m under more pressure than some managers because we are down at the bottom but as long as I am able I will be giving this job my all.”
Rovers, beaten in eight of their 11 League One games under Barnes and assistant Jason McAteer, were on top in last night’s second round tie for the best part of an hour – then paid for some missed chances and ragged second-half defending.
Barnes said: “We started well, the first half was a decent performance and we were 1-0 up. Two minutes into the second half Craig Curran had a great chance to make it 2-0 but the keeper saved it. A little later on Ian Goodison had a header hit the woodwork but that is symptomatic of the way it is going for us.”
Barnes added: “The only way we are going to get out of this is to stick together and keep trying. I can’t fault the lads for their effort and commitment but we do need to play with more understanding and composure.”
Barnes said he was disappointed with some of Tranmere’s travelling supporters. He said: “The fans did well to come out on a wet night to start calling for my head before the game even starts is their prerogative. When the lads were 1-0 up they were still on my back. If we were losing and not playing well then fine but for the fans to have a negative attitude before the game even kicks off is disappointing.”
