The 20-year-old front man joined the Rams in a £275,000-plus deal during the summer, after his final season with Tranmere was all but wiped out by a cruciate ligament injury.
Now Davies faces three months on the sidelines after suffering a fractured eye-socket. He sustained the injury during a Championship win over Plymouth last Saturday and has since has undergone an operation to correct the problem.
Rams boss Paul Jewell admitted: "It's a big blow for us and for him."
