RONNIE MOORE insists Tranmere are playing well enough to be “confident” about the prospect of tackling Carlisle United at Brunton Park this afternoon.
The manager believes Rovers’ patchy recent results don’t offer a true reflection of team performances – and backed up his argument with DVD evidence this week.
Moore was so determined to show his players that last Friday’s 4-3 home defeat to Colchester was a “freak” result that he made the squad sit through a recording of the whole game.
“I have shown the lads the DVD of the game,” Moore said. “We sat right through it. Sometimes you can look back at a game and be kidded but they realised what happened last Friday.
“When you look at three of the four goals we conceded they were magnificent strikes into the top corner. If they had been scored in the Premiership they would have been shown on TV all week.
“It was also incredible to see how much pressure we put on Colchester and how much possession we had.
“Friday was a freak game. Our lads know they are playing reasonably well and while Carlisle is going to be a difficult game, there is no reason why we can’t get can’t go there full of confidence. There is no doom and gloom here.”
Moore acknowledges however that his new look team have yet to find the knack of converting solid performances into results on a consistent basis.
He said: “There is no doubt in my mind that we deserve to be higher up the table on the strength of the way we’ve played.
“But this is a results game. Our priority is to turn performances into wins. Keeping a clean sheet would be so important and one of those is certainly overdue.”
Rovers have prevented the opposition from scoring only once in eight League One games so far this season – at home to Hartlepool in August.
Moore added: “We are working hard on it. I think we have as good a squad of players here as we have had for a while. We are not far away from being the team we want to be and I think we are due a little bit of luck.
“It would be nice to get a scruffy 1-0 result and go home asking: and we win that one?”
Tranmere were not the least bit fortunate when they won at Carlisle last season, on the strength of a first-half goal by Craig Curran.
Rovers were one of only three teams to win at Brunton Park in 2007-08, when a strong home record helped the Cumbrians secure a place in the League One play-offs.
John Ward’s team made a bright start to the new season, taking 13 points from the first 15 at stake – then hit a run of consecutive defeats to Scunthorpe, Leeds and Walsall.
Moore said: “Carlisle are very strong side, who are well organised and keep their discipline. That’s the way John Ward has his sides.
“They’ve lost their last three games and they won’t want to continue that for much longer. I think they have come out of the top six for the first time in 12 months – which is a tremendous record.”
Carlisle could well give a start to Jennison Myrie-Williams, a 20-year-old winger on loan from Bristol City who played 25 games for Rovers on a similar temporary assignment last season.
Moore said “Jennison has sat on the bench for a couple of games and I would imagine he would be looking forward to the chance to play against us. It will be strange. We saw his ability when he was here, playing on the left wing or on the right. Wherever he plays, our full-backs will know they have been in a game against him.”
Moore added: “This will be a big tester for us. We have spoken about Carlisle and we remember how we played there last season. We played 4-5-1 and counter-attacked very well that day.”
Moore want say whether he will depart from Tranmere’s staple 4-4-2 set-up again today but reports a clean bill of health among the squad.
He said: “Everyone is fit and raring to go.”
