SPEEDY winger Jennison Myrie-Williams is lined up to make a first League One start for Carlisle United tomorrow against his former team-mates from Tranmere.
The 20-year-old Bristol City prospect is on loan to the Cumbrians this month after playing 25 games for Rovers on a temporary assignment at Prenton Park last season.
Myrie-Williams impressed in a brief substitute appearance at Walsall last weekend and could well be part of a selection shake-up by manager John Ward.
The experienced Ward says Williams is “knocking on the door” as he seeks to break a run of three straight defeats that have dropped Carlisle out of the division’s top six for the first time in 50 games.
Ward said: “I am not going to keep people in the side on compassionate grounds. It will always be on form and what is right. Mostly this season it has been relatively easy for me to come to this decision but this isn’t an easy week.
“I am looking very carefully at the boys and if they have not got that glint in their eye, if there is any fear, they will have to wait. The response in training so far has been first class, and that has cheered me up.”
Myrie-Williams’ pace and raw talent were evident in his five-month stay with Tranmere last season. He scored four league and cup goals and worked hard with the coaching staff to improve the delivery of his final ball into the opposition penalty area.
Myrie-Williams has made two appearances from the bench since joining Carlisle in the middle of September.
Meanwhile a goal from Dave Wilson gave Tranmere’s under-19s a third victory of the Puma Youth Alliance campaign at the expense of Macclesfield Town at Raby Vale.
Wilson’s 66th-minute shot slipped under the body of the goalkeeper to give Rovers the points.
Coach John Garnett reckoned his team were good value for the victory. “It was a good performance,” he said. “We challenged the boys to play good passing football and they did just that.
“They showed a good work ethic which was missing the previous week.
“All of the boys were showing signs of developing as players. Now they have to find the consistency to perform well week in week out.”
Tranmere travel to Wigan Althletic in the Youth Alliance on Saturday.
FORMER stars of Tranmere Rovers and Manchester City will be turning out in a charity match next weekend to help three-year-old Alder Hey cancer sufferer Antonia Gaskin.
Prenton Park heroes from the recent past such as Steve Mungall, Kenny Irons, Ged Brannan and Eric Nixon will be joined by ex-City stars such as Asa Hartford, Peter Barnes and Paul Simpson.
The match, taking place at Birkenhead St Mary’s Cricket Club in Birkenhead Park on Sunday, October 12 (kick-off 1pm) will also feature the Ged Wells Liverpool XI.
Rovers are reducing admission prices for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy second round tie against Crewe Alexandra on Monday, October 6 (KO 7pm).
Chief executive Mick Horton said: “This price reduction is just the first of many we plan to run throughout the season aimed at many different groups of supporters.”
TICKET DETAILS: In addition to the reduced rates, full paying adults purchasing match tickets from the ticket office or club shop will be entitled to one free junior ticket. This offer applies to stand tickets, not executive suites.
