Four killed as car careers into tree in Wirral

The smash happened just 150 yards from a roadway sign stating “59 collisions in three years”.

Cheshire Police described Chester High Road as a “red route” which meant enforcement action was in place due to a high number of accidents.

Geoff Parker, who lives nearby in The Runnell, told the Daily Post: “It’s a bad spot for accidents. They reduced the speed from 60mph to 40mph a few years ago.

“But there are still collisions there.

“It’s very, very sad that four people have lost their lives.”

Cyclist Anthony Martin, from nearby Parkgate Lane, said he was awoken by the sound of the crash at 2.06am.

He added: “It’s a terrible tragedy for the area. But I’m not surprised an accident has happened there.

“Cars come up here very fast.

“I have three children and I’m very aware of road safety.”

Superintendent Craig Guildford, of Cheshire Police, said: “We are investigating a one-vehicle collision which has tragically led to the loss of four lives.

“We are appealing for witnesses and anyone who saw these four people in the hours leading up to the crash.

“The scene itself is very difficult for the emergency services.

“We don’t know what caused the incident.

“Weather could have been a factor. I do need people to come forward.

“We have dedicated family liaison officers talking with the families of those killed.”
