Almost £1m to be spent to improve death rate on Wirral’s roads

Disturbingly, the report showed the number of children injured who were themselves drunk or on drugs had more than doubled, from 8% to 17%, between 2004 and 2006.

Describing the figure as “worrying”, council officers pledged to work with more recent data to identify how to reduce that number.

The relative affluence of some parts of Wirral have been used to explain the borough’s road safety record.

Police believe a glut of younger people driving powerful cars and a growing population of older motorists has contributed to accidents.
