Trapped horse sparks emergency rescue at Wirral riding school

Firemen rescue a horse from mud in Wirral

It is thought the animal got trapped and started to sink in a muddy area after following the length of a fence while scratching herself.

“Once we had a stable platform we had to use our hands to force the hose underneath the horse and use brute strength to pull her up,” said Mr Leith.

Staff at Barnston Riding School, in Gills Lane, said they were relieved no harm had come to Penny, who was described as one of their best loved horses with a well behaved, quiet nature that makes her a favourite with adults and beginners – and probably helped with the ease of the rescue.

Vets initially feared Penny would not survive the ordeal, but after being cleaned and fed it is thought she will make a full recovery.

She is expected to undergo more vetinary checks over the coming daysto monitor her progress.

The 25 acre site in Wirral has indoor and outdoor riding schools .
