A BEACON stretching up to 90 metres in the sky overlooking the Wirral Waters site is one of the proposals being developed for the £4.5bn scheme at Birkenhead docks.
Peel project director Richard Mawdsley said they are currently focusing on the Tower Road area – known locally as the Four Bridges – and the hydraulic tower which they hope will be one of the early developments, along with the proposed Wirral Beacon nearby.
He said they have approached Marks Barfield, designers of the London Eye, to develop the idea and said: “We want to create something that is visible from the Pier Head in Liverpool – at the moment all you really see rising up are the tunnel vents. We are working on the viewing tower, although it is still at the concept stage. We want something iconic you can view from the Liverpool side.”
The company had also revealed plans for a “streetcar” or tram system for Wirral Waters.
