Lucky escape as brick wall collapses on car containing mum and baby

A MUM and her two young daughters had a lucky escape after a suspected drunk driver hit a brick wall which then collapsed onto their car in Wirral.

The woman, 19, was parked in the car park of the Co-op store on Victoria Road, New Brighton, when a black Vauxhall Corsa ploughed into the six foot high wall at around 1pm yesterday.

Bricks and iron railings crashed into the woman’s maroon Ford Focus, smashing both its driver side windows and showering the driver and her children, aged seven months and two years, with glass.

Shoppers flagged down a passing ambulance which treated the young family who were deemed not to need hospital care.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed that a 68-year-old man from Wallasey had been arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving.

Eyewitnesses working in nearby shops on the busy street said that it was not the first time the wall had been hit by drivers.

A staff member in Cards Galore, who did not want to be named, told the ECHO: "This is the second time in six months that it has been knocked down.

"It is such a wide entrance I don't know how you could miss it.
