A SHOP assistant was attacked as a masked gang of robbers escaped with cash.
The five thugs raided the Co-op in Laird Street, Birkenhead just before 9pm on Saturday.
One of the men punched a staff member in the face before they made off with the takings from the tills.
No-one was seriously injured but staff were left shaken up by their ordeal.
The gang of five men were all wearing dark coloured clothing and had their faces covered during the attack.
DS Toni Tate of Merseyside Police said: “I would urge anyone with information about this incident, particularly those who may have seen a group of males matching these descriptions, acting suspiciously in the area before the incident to contact us.”
Detectives have searched the shop and have stepped up patrols in the area.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “At about 8.55pm five males entered the Co-operative store on Laird Street and approached the counter. The males threatened the two members of staff and demanded cash. One of the males hit a member of staff in the face during the incident.
The males then left the premises with an amount of cash.
“House-to-house enquiries are ongoing and CCTV is being sought from the area.
Patrols have been stepped up in the area to help reassure residents.”
“An investigation into the full circumstances of the robbery is ongoing.”
The robbery happened just days after armed robberies at a shop in Wallasey and one in Birkenhead, when two masked yobs held up shop assistants at gun point.
They raided the Best One store on Seaview Road, Wallasey just after 8pm before launching their second assault on the MRM store on Bold Street, Birkenhead.
At the second the shop one of the staff bravely foiled the gunman before chasing the two thieves from the shop.
