It's Our World
Slimming World is the UK’s largest and most advanced slimming organisation.
It was founded in Derbyshire in 1969 by Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE, who remains the driving force behind the company today. With the experience of a lifetime’s weight problem, it is her passion and unique vision that has made the company so successful.
Slimming World now holds more than 6,500 groups weekly across Britain (in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) run by a network of 2,700 Slimming World trained Consultants. Around 300,000 members attend Slimming World each week.
In 2001, Slimming World pioneered referral schemes, where GPs can ‘prescribe’ attendance of a group for 12 weeks, free to the patient and subsidised by Slimming World. So far Slimming World has worked with over 60 NHS Trusts and more than 50,000 patients have benefited from the programme. On average referral members lose more than 5% of their starting weight in 12 weeks, at about half the cost of obesity drugs.
Working with university researchers and specialists in obesity, Slimming World also supports an active research programme to further our knowledge of the causes and treatment of obesity and to ensure that our service to members stays at the leading edge of science, nutrition and weight management. Slimming World is a key partner in a pan-European research project called Diogenes to identify the key predictors of successful weight loss and weight management. The research integrates studies of dietary, genetic, physiological and behavioural factors in weight management and aims to advance understanding of how obesity can be prevented and treated.
Our policies and practices are also influenced by a special advisor panel, which includes Professor Ken Fox (an advisor to the government on exercise) and Professor Andrew Hill from University of Leeds.
In 2006 Slimming World launched a unique programme for 11 to 15 year olds. Through the Family Affair programme, children between the ages of 11 and 15 attend Slimming World free of charge when accompanied by their parent / guardian. They follow a special healthy eating plan called Free2Go which is based on everyday healthy foods for all the family and encourages them to make healthy swaps, replacing high fat foods such as pizzas or milkshakes with healthier yet practical alternatives. Around 40,000 young people have benefited from the scheme.
Slimming World has an Investors in People accreditation, renewed for the fourth time in 2009, and was awarded 6th Best Company to Work For by the Sunday Times in 2004, achieving Best for Leadership and Top 3 for Giving Something Back. It retained its Top 100 position for four consecutive years.
In 2008 Slimming World opened its first groups in the Republic of Ireland and in its 40th Anniversary year, in September 2009, launched two groups in Dallas, Texas, USA in a pioneering move to the West. Our charity SMILES (Slimmers Making it a Little Easier for Someone) was launched in 1997 and since then has raised over £2million for a range of charities. Our charity partner for 2010 is the NSPCC. In 2009 SMILES raised £250,000 for the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal.
Our unique approach to weight loss Slimming World’s approach is based on a deep understanding of the psychology of slimmers. We believe that the burden carried by overweight people is two-fold. There is excess weight, but there is a far heavier burden to be lifted – that of guilt, self-criticism and poor self-esteem.
Slimming World helps people to shed the misery of excess weight – and that does not necessarily mean becoming thin – by helping them lead happier, more fulfilling, less stressful and therefore healthier lives. We strive to ensure members have the motivation, confidence and support they need in order to make healthy and highly effective lifestyle changes for life.
Our members’ weight remains confidential at all times: weight is discussed in the group in terms of amount gained or lost, but a member’s actual weight is not disclosed. We allow all members to choose their own target weight, a concept unique to Slimming World. This is called their Personal Achievement Target (PAT) and they can alter it at any time*. Once they’ve achieved it, they become a lifetime member and can attend group free of charge (as long as they stay within 3lbs of their target weight). We have around 30,000 target members at any one time (around 10% of our membership).
Slimming World is the only weight loss plan which supports women to manage their weight healthily during pregnancy. Our pregnancy programme, created in conjunction with the Royal College of Midwives, is designed to ensure that mums-to-be and breastfeeding mothers can continue to manage their weight, with the consent of their midwife. We are so confident in the effectiveness of our weight loss programme that we offer a money back guarantee. If a member didn’t lose weight within the first four weeks of membership, we would refund their fees. Slimming World members lose weight through a unique combination: powerful, effective group support and shared experience with other slimmers called IMAGE Therapy, which encourages long-term behaviour change learning to eat more healthily through our Food Optimising eating plan regular moderate exercise through our Body Magic programme.
