As a 15-time winner of the prestigious Green Apple award, which recognises the most environmentally friendly councils in the country, Knowsley is justifiably proud of its green credentials.

Knowsley Council is committed to addressing climate change and signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change in October 2007. Last year, we produced our first Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan, outlining our vision to achieve a cooler future for Knowsley by 2023 taking action and changing behaviours to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change.

The Councils commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and services, has seen the introduction of initiatives including:

  • *Introducing 95/5% blend of biodiesel in Council fleet vehicles, which has reduced CO2 emissions by 44 Tonnes per year;
  • *Monitoring of energy use in Council buildings and schools halving CO2 emissions from our seven leisure centres.
  • *Increasing use of recycled content paper within the Council;
  • *Offering Fairtrade beverages at all Council meetings and catering services;
  • *The use of recycled aggregates or hard demolition materials for construction, diverting thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill.

Almost 20% of the energy used by Knowsleys new Centres for Learning will come from ground source heat pumps, a renewable form of energy. The council has also introduced sustainability surgeries for staff, as well as a staff Green Guide and dedicated intranet pages.

Stop Think Recycle

Increasing recycling rates is also a top priority for the Borough, with Knowsley introducing a successful co-mingled waste recycling service last year. The new grey bin service has seen Knowsleys recycling rates increase by a massive 64% on the previous year.

Plans are now underway for the introduction of an innovative food waste recycling scheme from 5 October.
