FOUR young musicians from Wallasey rocked a Battle of the Bands competition in Liverpool.
Indie rock band Clever Criminals – formed of sixthformers from St Mary’s Catholic College – triumphed in the 2012 Liverpool Rocks! contest held in the city’s O2 Academy.
They were judged overall best band from more than 100 entries.
The North West-wide competition has been running since January.
Clever Criminals will now join major names to play in the Liverpool Sound City urban music festival, which takes place over three days this month.
It will be headlined by Brit-nominated rapper Professor Green.
Joe Tarpey, the band’s singer-songwriter and guitarist, said: “We were all really nervous before we went on stage, but when we started playing and the crowd were shouting for us, it felt brilliant.
“It was fantastic to win.”
The other band members are Scott Adair, who writes most of the music and plays lead guitar, bass player Ryan Stuart and drummer Callum Hibbard.
The Year 13 students have been playing together for just over a year.
As well as the chance to play in Liverpool Sound City, they also collected a cash prize of £500.
The band, who are about to record their first album, can be seen next at a gig at St Luke’s – better known as the Bombed Out Church – in Liverpool on June 2.
