Charity night at Revolver in Birkenhead taking place in memory of late doorman Paul “Smiddy” Smith

A SPECIAL charity event is taking place at Revolver in Birkenhead next week in memory of popular doorman Paul Smith.

Paul, known as “Smiddy” to friends and colleagues, was found dead in tragic circumstances last month.

Since his death, more than 1,500 people have left comments on a Facebook page set up to pay tribute to him.

His colleagues say his infectious sense of humour and sense of fairness endeared him to both staff and customers.

Fellow Revolver doorman Jamie Mac said: “He was a friend to a lot of people. However, he had a unique different bond to the people he chose to take as his friend.

“When he took you under his wing, you felt bigger and knew you had someone who would be there for you at any time.

“Throughout the 15 years or more I have known Smiddy. the same theme echoes through. He was all heart.”

A former boxer and boxing promoter, Smiddy donated proceeds from the events he put on to charity.

He was a passionate supporter of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and last year persuaded his bosses at Revolver to put on a charity show to raise money to help endangered species.

He was also an active supporter of the PDSA in Liverpool, which treats pets owned by people on low incomes.

Before the charity night last September, he told the News he wanted the night to raise awareness of the number of tigers left in the wild.

At the time he said: “People just talk about it but I want us to do something about it.”

THE Smiddy charity night is on Thursday, August 25. Proceeds will go towards his funeral costs, to the WWF and the PDSA.

Bands playing on the night are The Revellers – who include Glyn Williams from China Crisis in their ranks – The Low Tones and Kush.

The first band will be on stage at 9pm. For more details, visit www.revolver-rocks.com
