WIRRAL acoustic roots band Elbow Jane are playing their biggest local gig to date to celebrate the release of their new album.
The five-piece’s blend of bouzouki, mandolins, guitars, piano and percussion has seen them hailed as one of the top acoustic acts in the country.
They will perform at the Floral Pavilion Theatre, New Brighton on September 10.
Frontman, singer, guitarist and songwriter Richard Woods said: “We’re excited because the Floral is the premier venue on our home patch.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to play at the Floral on two previous occasions but, to be honest, both were as support to Kate Rusby and The Houghton Weavers and both were before the amazing refurb that has gone on.
“I believe it’s even better to play at now and the best part about it being our gig is that we’ll get to play a bit longer!”
Elbow Jane’s new album, The Boldest Blood, is made up entirely of original material written by band members Kev Byrne, Joe Topping and Richard Woods,.
Their fourth album it is their second release through Fellside Recordings.
“It’s been hard work” explains Chris Chesters, bass player with the band. “It would help if the studios weren’t three hours away by car but we really enjoy recording.
“We all have a say in the song arrangements and we’re all great friends; which helps when you’ve got to tell someone else that what they’re doing is rubbish!”
The concert will support armed forces charity Help for Heroes – chosen because the title track of the album, written by Joe Topping, focuses on bravery in battle and loss during times of war.
Pianist Kev Byrne said: “We know that there are thousands of amazing charities affecting people in Wirral but it seems appropriate to support Help for Heroes now. Joe has a habit of writing emotional songs but I think people appreciate it when songs create feelings, whatever they are.”
At the Floral the band will be supported by Irish singer-songwriter Andy Irvine, formerly of Sweeney’s Men, Planxty, Patrick Street and Mozaik.
“We are all really looking forward to it,” says drummer Steve Finnigan.
“We’ve played the Pacific Road twice now in the last 4 years and there’s only one venue in Wirral bigger than that. It’s going to be a great night.”
lAll tickets are £13 from 666 0000 or www.floralpavilion.com
A collection for Help for Heroes will be made on the night and a percentage of proceeds made through CD sales will be donated to the charity.
