IS this the way to New Brighton? Veteran crooner Tony Christie has been in showbiz for half a century in 2011 and he’s marking the anniversary with a 50-date tour and a new album, Now’s The Time.
And the (Is This The Way To) Amarillo? star is starting the celebrations with a concert for Age Concern Wirral at the Floral Pavilion Theatre on Saturday, February 12.
The 67-year-old’s last LP, 2009’s Made in Sheffield, was a critical and commercial success and when Tony spoke to Day and Night, he was basking in the critics’ praise for his new release.
The South Yorkshire-born singer last appeared at the Floral “many years ago” and he says he has fond memories of visiting pubs near the theatre for a pre-concert pint.
But this time his busy schedule – and a trip to Australia the following day – means his stay will be a brief one.
Tony is reluctant to pick out his favourite moments from the last 50 years, saying he’s just happy to be working.
Before Christmas that work included an appearance on Come Dine With Me – although Tony admits he’s better at singing than he is in the kitchen (“It’s a good job my wife was there helping”)
He said: “It feels like the 50 years went very quickly.
