Sean Hughes coming to Floral Pavilion

Sean Hughes

BORN to be a stand-up – his own words – Sean Hughes is bringing his latest tour to New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion.

The 44 year old comedian has enjoyed a varied career from winning the Perrier Award at Edinburgh at the young age of 22, to his own TV show, a part in Coronation Street, team captain of Never Mind the Buzzcocks and novelist.

His latest tour “What I Meant To Say Was...” brings him back to standup comedy which he says is what he enjoys most: “everything else is a bonus but I was born to be a stand up and that's where I feel most comfortable, and what I love doing”.

But doing a tour is demanding for even the most experienced performers and he admitted that “travelling does my head in”.

In between shows he tries to avoid using up his energy and aims simply to “try and stay sane and sober before the show”.

But there is little planning of what will happen each night as he goes on stage. He said: “A lot of the time I'll look at the local paper and the audience and that gets me started.

“But I would never be a patronising person and go I know all about your area, I'll have a look at it as an outsider. But I’m very much into the process of tonight's a fresh show.”

He said: “The very fact that I do keep it fresh is what stands me out from other comics. I don't know what I'll say tonight, for example.”
