Eighties stars China Crisis to play fundraising gig for Friends of Meols Park

EIGHTIES legends China Crisis are coming to Hoylake early next year to raise money for a Wirral playground.

Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon are playing at Jack Rabbit Slims on Thursday, February 5 in aid of the Friends of Meols Park.

Determined residents formed the Friends last autumn after the slide and climbing frame in the park’s play area were condemned and ripped up in July 2007.

The group has so far raised thousands of pounds towards new play equipment for Meols Park.

Secretary of the Friends of Meols Park, Roy Shuttleworth said: “I contacted the band and told them what we’re raising funds for and they agreed to come along and play.

“It’s probably the biggest band we’ve ever seen playing live in Hoylake.”

By March the Friends of Meols Park had raised £6,700 for new play equipment, with a further £3,000 pledged by Wirral Council.

Fundraising this year has included a 10-strong group of female volunteers abseiling 200ft from the roof of the Royal Liverpool Hospital, raising over £1,500.

The first new piece of play equipment in the park - a “multi-play unit” - was installed in July.

Roy added: “China Crisis are legends and one of the biggest bands of the 1980s and we’re honoured they’ll be performing for our cause.

“We also have to thank Jack Rabbit Slims for letting us have the venue for the night.”

Tickets for the event are £12, available from 632 0705 or 07970 990774.

Tickets can also be bought online at www.friendsofmeolspark.co.uk, where a booking fee applies.

The gig starts at 7.30pm. A support act will be announced closer to the date.
